Donate Equipment

If you have old trekking or office equipment that still has some life in it, either:

Here is a list of what we need in particular:

What the porters have asked for What we need in the office
Mattresses:
Many of the porters currently sleep directly on the cold ground.
General stationery supplies:
e.g: blu-tak, marker pens, paper.
Sleeping bags:
Porters currently use their carrying blanket but these get wet during the day and stay wet for the entire trip.
Digital camera:
For taking photos at workshops which are then used in publications.
Durable waterproof ponchos: Ponchos are preferred to rain jackets because they can cover both porter and pack. miniDVD video camera:
For making AV educational materials for training porters and tourists. It would also allow the porters to make a video of their daily lives.
Head torches:
Many porters use candles in old plastic water bottles giving insufficient light.
A video player: (NTSC format):
To show educational videos to porters and tourists.
Battery recharging kits:
For the head torch batteries
A data projector:
For workshops and presentations to local organisations.
Tents with integral floors:
To loan to porters taking independent trekkers.
Any computer equipment:
Especially lap-top computers and a CD burner and disks.  Please contact the Cusco office to discuss present needs.

Volunteer opportunities with the Inka Porter Project

We have short-, medium- and long-term voluntary opportunities in Cusco and Ollantaytambo, or from your home.
Current long-term volunteer roles include:

This list is not exhaustive, if you think that you have skills we may be able to use, please fill out an application form. (Download form).

  • Any administrators out there? Office help is sometimes welcome

  • Computer advice and know-how is always useful, from designing web pages to fixing our computers

  • Teaching English in rural communities

  • Designing display boards and materials

  • Writing grant applications

  • Running money-raising events like quizzes, presentations and raffles

  • Helping to staff the training centre in Ollantaytambo

Long term: a year or more.
For this, you must be a fluent Spanish speaker

Training Centre:

We have opened a training centre for porters and animal drivers in Ollantaytambo, two hours from Cusco and close to the trailhead for Peru´s most popular walk, the Inka Trail.

The centre will train porters so that they have the skills and confidence to make positive choices about how they work. It will be accessible to all porters and animal drivers in the Sacred Valley.

Training will be fully participative at each stage, from development to delivery to evaluation and porters will learn to train each other.  Workshops will be developed in waste management, sanitation, health, carrying techniques, first aid, legal rights and languages.

We are currently looking for funds to employ training staff but expect the centre to be staffed by volunteers for at least a year.

Therefore we are looking for volunteers to commit for a minimum of a year in the role of Training Centre Manager.

The role involves daily direct contact with porters and is an excellent opportunity to extend your experience in sustainable development by playing a key role for a grass-roots NGO.

Cusco Office:
Our Cusco office is open from Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5pm.
We welcome long-term volunteers with skills in the following fields:

Administration
Fundraising
Computing
Spanish/English translation
Environmental experience
Web design & maintenance
Accounting
Press and marketing

To apply for a role with the Inka Porter Project, please complete the application form and send your CV and a covering letter to porters@peruweb.org
